You’ve probably heard about Mimco’s new loyalty program MIMCOLLECTIVE. But in case you weren’t quick enough to get in store to claim your card along with a purchase, you would have missed out on your $50 reward.

Well, the lovely ladies at MIMCO have sent me two brand new MIMCOLLECTIVE cards to give away to two lucky Style Sage readers, and all you have to do to get your mitts on one, is send through a photo of you with your favourite MIMCO piece, to renuka@stylesage.co.uk. It can be a hat, bag, necklace, hairband, anything. Send us a photo, and at the end of next week we will announce the lucky two winners of these reward cards, cashed up with $50!

So get snapping and good luck!

The National Portrait Gallery, Canberra

by renuka on November 23, 2011

You’ve probably seen the recent TV ad for the National Portrait Gallery. Funnily enough, I was lucky enough to make a visit myself, following a short work trip to Canberra.

It was marvellous. Probably better, in fact, than the one in London (and that’s saying something since for the longest time it’s been one of my favourite galleries in the world!)

The National Portrait Gallery of Australia, set only a stone’s throw from The National Gallery, comprises more than six galleries, all curated by theme, rather than chronologically, like the one in London.

I’ve always thought of portrait galleries as a great way to learn about the history of a culture, as it’s much more engaging and interesting to focus on the life or work of a person, than a general movement or event. It’s the narrative strands that make history come to life, for me anyway.

One of the most striking works in the gallery, and my favourite, is this incredibly captivating portrait below of Nick Cave, by Howard Arkley. Commissioned by the gallery itself, it was one of the last works he created before he died. I picked up a print and had it framed, for the new place. Every time I look at it, I see something new.

Denim care 101

by renuka on November 20, 2011

There’s a girl I know who buys new jeans quite often. Nice jeans, often dark denim. The unfortunate thing being that every time she dons a pair of new denim, she invariably ends up with smurf-blue hands and shirt hems. I despair to think about how her suede shoes would fare.

I myself just bought a new pair of rigid dark denim jeans this weekend, and thought it might be helpful to share a few tips on how you can keep your jeans looking as good as the day you bought them.

The first thing you should do when you take home a new pair of dark denim jeans, is a salt bath. Get a bucket or laundry sink filled with cold water, then pour in a cup of salt. Stir in with a wooden spoon until the salt is dissolved and the water looks cloudy. Then submerge your new jeans until any air is pushed out, and your jeans sit beneath the water without you holding them down. Leave the jeans in there for an hour. After the hour’s up, rinse the jeans, and throw them in a cold wash on their own. This will lock the colour in to a certain extent, so that they will lose less colour with each of the initial washes.

And for those of you who need a re-cap on the basics…

  • Don’t wash them daily – Denim thins with every wash.
  • Always wash them in a cold cycle – Warm/hot cycles mess with the elasticity, so remove deep stains with rubbing alcohol.
  • Always wash them insite out – it will slow the fade in colour.
  • NEVER put them in the dryer – This wears the weave and melts the elastane.
  • Dry them flat, or hang them from the heels – it helps them keep their shape.

2011 Emirates Melbourne Cup

by renuka on November 1, 2011

Had a ball at Melbourne Cup today, made a little money on the horses, enjoyed the awesome hospitality of the TabCorp marquee in the Birdcage, and got to meet Adrian Grenier. What more could I ask for?

The lovely ladies at MIMCO were nice enough to dress me up in some gorgeous accessories, including the fascinator and earrings you see below (the MIMCO necklace and sandals are old favourites of mine).

There was a record turnout, a photo-finish for first, second and third place, and some amazingly stylish women about.

The ever suave Adrian Grenier (AKA Vincent Chase), at the Hilton marquee…

Here are a few of my favourite looks from the Birdcage…

Ways to wear a scarf, by Coach

by renuka on October 23, 2011

For my birthday, I received the most beautiful scarf from Coach. As you’ve probably noticed, I love scarves, and have a rather extensive collection. However this particular one, is something a little different. Extremely skinny and long, I’ve taken to wearing it with collared shirts in a massive bow, in place of a bow-tie.

Along with the gift, came a beautifully illustrated booklet, describing different ways by which to tie a scarf. I loved it so much I’ve copied each of the pages below.

Street Style: The Caulfield Cup

by renuka on October 16, 2011

We had an amazing day at the Caulfield Cup on Saturday. Even the Melbourne weather managed to hold out til the cup race. We didn’t win much on the horses, but had a gala time judging the Fashions on the Fields with Cathryn Wills of MIIMCO. Below are a few of my favourites from on and off the stage.
